Campas.

Find where to camp, just here.

Living in a country like Mexico, which has a lot of ecosystems, I started to get excited about the idea of camping, its versatility and I would discover beautiful places far from the city, just by taking my tent.

Understanding the problem

Where do I even start camping?

Starting my desk research using google trends, analyzed the results of the word "acampar", obtaining an interesting result where even with a year affected by a pandemic, the search for this word increased, also "lugares donde acampar" it's the first related query.

Then I looked up some camping websites and blogs and most of them were about flights, lifestyle, and even newspaper pages.

After this first research, I carried out the research questions, which helped me to define some doubts that I had, and know how I was going to approach the questionnaire.

Polls

To complement the desk research and validate hypotheses, I ran polls across camping communities, capturing real motivations, blockers and habits from active and aspiring campers.

User persona

Meeting Angie and Gabriel.

Once all the data was collected and analyzed, I had all the information to create the User Persona, and be able to focus on the user. I did the two most common User Persona my research threw up, Angie and Gabriel.

A
Angie.
The aspiring camper

I want to go camping, but I don't know where it's safe, comfortable, or worth the trip.

G
Gabriel.
The experienced camper

I want to share spots with friends and discover places I haven't been to yet.

User journey

Following Angie's footsteps.

We are going to develop Angie's Customer Journey, since in it we see some of the most outstanding insights that we have found in the research.

Problem definition

Three things to solve.

After obtaining this data, I reached the following conclusions:

  • Include a social factor, such as inviting friends, as most see camping as a group activity.
  • Gamification to motivate users to answer questions, create camps, etc.
  • Help users reach their destination.

And finally I did a benchmarking looking for a product similar to what I was trying to do on the market.

Solution

After all the previous work, I found the answer.

An app for campers.

This application will allow its users to search and find camping places, help them to reach their destination easily, and a social factor that is key to generating a motivating factor, camping being a group activity.

After generating the flowchart that would allow me to see how to organize the app, I generated the wireframes with the most relevant screens.

Why "Campas".

It was endowed with an image and a name, Campas being easy to pronounce and pronunciation sounding the same in English and Spanish. Also using a vivid color palette based on the colors of a camping sunset.

07
Design system

Components, not duplicates.

I created an efficient design system to start prototyping, in which I placed the elements I needed to work smoothly.

The token set, components, color ramp and typography came directly from the camping-sunset palette established with the brand.

High-fidelity screens

From wireframes to real screens.

After developing the wireframes, I started designing screens in high fidelity.

App features

Five things Campas does.

In the following prototype we can see some key functions of the app:

01
Smart search.
02
Invite friends to join the camp.
03
Suggestions of camping places.
04
Agenda & reservation.

Conclusions

What I take with me.

We live on a planet that constantly expands its urban areas, being able to escape from all the noise of the city is something incredible, I learned a lot about campers and their way of seeing the world always with respect and admiration for nature.

Camping is an activity with a key question from inexperienced that wants to join, "Where can I camp?" I was surprised to find that question everywhere, being able to design a digital product based on this, is the perfect opportunity for people to leave all those questions and insecurities behind and join this beautiful activity.

Working hand in hand with design thinking is the ideal way to find an effective and viable solution to a problem.

Made with love,
Bryant.
